Railway wheels and sustainability
The availability of iron ore in Norrland results in significant volumes of heavy transport, leading to constant wear and tear on railway wheels. With a focus on the environment, railway traffic is also increasing, both in terms of passenger and freight transport. To extend the lifespan of railway wheels, Duroc Rail offers maintenance services to keep the wheels in optimal condition for reuse. This translates to safer and more reliable transportation.
The energy consumption for goods and passenger traffic on railways is less than half of that consumed in road traffic. Comparing carbon dioxide emissions, railway traffic emits a fraction of what road traffic emits. By ensuring the supply of railway wheels to our customers, Duroc Rail contributes to reduced environmental impact.

Strategic partnership with LKAB
New modern production facility
Duroc has entered into a strategic collaboration with LKAB aimed at jointly developing the offering within maintenance for railway wheels and related components, which has been completed. The collaboration entails that LKAB has acquired 49 percent of Duroc Rail AB for a final purchase price of approximately 79 million SEK and that LKAB, together with Duroc Rail, will construct a new production facility in Luleå.
The new production facility, owned by LKAB and utilized by Rail, is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. A 20-year lease agreement with an option for extension has been signed between the parties. The property covers approximately 40,000 square meters of land with approximately 7,000 square meters of production space. The investment will enable increased capacity and flexibility and is sized to support the expected future growth anticipated for Duroc Rail's operations.
